Sticks and Stones

There is an old saying...
Sticks and Stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.

We have all heard it, and we may even say it, but I think it far from truth.

Words can break hearts.
Words can wound spirits.
Words can damage relationships.
Words can hurt.
Plain and simple.

We are all so very hard on ourselves most of the time, the extra sharp, harsh words are usually something we may be thinking of anyways, and our greatest fears are unleashed and that is a hard thing to deal with. A fountain of fear and failure comes flooding into your mind and it is a detriment to your spirit.
I remember this one thing that was said to me when I was a young woman, it cut me to the core... when I get down, and low... those words that wounded me want to rise up and rip me to shreds.

Friend, that is of the enemy. He wants to wound you and make you feel inadequate and damage any good relationship you have. He wants to tear families apart. He wants to break your spirit and keep your joy for himself.

The Bible says...

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Ephesians 4:29

It is extremely important to gain control of our tongue and of what we say and what we think. There is great power in words.

Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.
Proverbs 16:24

Words can do all the damage as we have seen... but words can also heal the spirit and strengthen the person!

A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Proverbs 15:1

Consider your words before you say them. There is great power in the tongue.

But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
Colossians 3:8

Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.
Proverbs 12:25

Even when speaking the truth, please take into consideration how you say it. Don't speak in harshness or hastiness. Be deliberate of what you say, be aware of the words you speak.

So as you go about your day and you have situations that are difficult...
and we know that they will come...
Realize that your words can either help or hinder.
Your words can heal or break.
Your words can be a ray of hope or the last straw...

Words are powerful.
Use them with utmost care.

Especially and most importantly to those who you love.
