Kindly Quiet

Around here, when we say something is a 'little' this or a 'little' that... sometimes we say 'kindly'.
Like today... I feel kindly quiet. :)
More like it is kindly quiet for several days, huh?
Life has been busily humming along here.
Scouts crossing over ceremony and AWANA ending up for the year at church.
Trying to round up some of our big projects in our lessons for the year.
Seeing and feeling our temperatures shoot back down after such summery weather.
It has been days full to overflowing...
Still the majority of the garden hasn't been planted. :(
Still, we need to repair the root cellar.
But, we will be happy with what we can get accomplished.
So until I can get anything more exciting around this space, please enjoy some pictures of our latest goings-on. :)

Wearing your baby

When my Abram was a baby, I was gifted a ring sling. I LOVED it!
I now make them for my etsy shop.
I took these pictures long ago to show how versatile the ring sling can be.
If I had a baby... :)
Carlie Jean's baby doll makes for a good example  of how you can wear your baby snuggled up against your bosom. :)
And now wearing my little man...
You can wear your bigger ones on your back... he looks thrilled, eh? haha
Abe has gotten extremely goofy and when I ask him to smile, he LOVES being silly. :)
Here is how you can wear them on your side. It is so nice because when you wear your baby, they stay close to you and you still have your hands free. 

Any Moma of little ones has to love that. ;)

Follow the yellow brick road...

A fellow I go to church with made a comment that this little quilt made him think about following the yellow brick road. :)
I think he might be right...
Once I look at it like that, I can't think of a better title. :)
Although... there are quite a few breaks in the road... I guess that is where we will have to jump. :)

Lemon Buttercream Cake with Lemon Curd



I have been itching to make a lemon cake from scratch for a long while now... So after listening to a cd on the Family Meal Table, I was inspired to make our first meal thereafter special.
I began with making the lemon curd.
As I mentioned on facebook (if you are friends with me there ;) I thoroughly enjoyed this.
It was very satisfying in a weird way. Here's how you make it with the recipe I used...

Lemon Curd:

3 large eggs
1/3 cup (80 ml) fresh lemon juice (2-3 lemons) (do not use the bottled lemon juice)
1 tablespoon (4 grams) finely shredded lemon zest
3/4 cup (150 grams) granulated white sugar
4 tablespoons (56 grams) unsalted butter, at room temperature (I used salted and it worked fine)
Lemon Curd: In a stainless steel bowl placed over a saucepan of simmering water, whisk together the eggs, sugar, and lemon juice until blended. Cook, stirring constantly (to prevent it from curdling), until the mixture becomes thick (like sour cream or a hollandaise sauce) (160 degrees F or 71 degrees C). This will take approximately 10 minutes. Remove from heat and immediately pour through a fine strainer to remove any lumps. Cut the butter into small pieces and whisk into the mixture until the butter has melted. Add the lemon zest and let cool. The lemon curd will continue to thicken as it cools. Cover immediately (so a skin doesn't form) and refrigerate for up to a week.
Makes 1 1/2 cups (360 ml).
Note: If you want a lighter lemon curd whip 1/2 cup (120 ml) of heavy whipping cream and fold into the lemon curd.
 Here is the cake recipe I used...
  • 3 cup(s) cake flour





  • 1/2 cup(s) (about 3 large eggs) egg whites
  • 1 cup(s) granulated sugar
  • 1 pound(s) unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1 tablespoon(s) finely grated lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon(s) fresh lemon juice

Directions
  1. Make the frosting: In a large stainless-steel bowl placed over a pot filled with 1 inch of simmering water, place the egg whites and sugar. Use a whisk to beat the mixture until it is very hot to the touch (about 160 degrees F). Remove from heat and, using a mixer set on high speed, immediately begin whipping the mixture until it is cool, thick, and glossy and has tripled in volume -- about 5 minutes. Reduce mixer speed to medium and add the butter -- about a quarter cup at a time -- allowing 5 to 10 seconds in between each addition. Add the lemon zest and lemon juice and continue to beat until smooth and fluffy.
It turned out great. It was tart and sweet and wonderful.

New Members to the Homestead

Over the weekend we happily welcomed some new members to our little homestead.
My Dad brought over a catfish that he had caught and then told me that a friend of his came by and put about 20+ fish in our pond without even telling me. WOO HOO! Time to get the bait and tackle ready! :) Eli has been eagerly wanting to fish since his trip to Skymont with the Scouts. :)
Second...
We have a brand new pair of guinea fowl. Hooray! I have been wanting some of these critters for a while now. They are AWESOME at eating ticks and ants and are great 'watch dogs'.
And for us... they are good alarm clocks too!
This is how we woke up yesterday morning.
Papua New Guinea was on top of Shannon's truck crowing like a mad-man. It was great.

I haven't seen Mama New Guinea this morning, but hopefully she is just learning her way around her new home. :)

Thursday's Flea Market

Now that warmer weather is here again, it is time for the Thursday Flea Market.
I LOVE going. There is so much 'stuff' and so many people. I love to watch people haggle and barter. It is so much fun.
I think it is a hoot to see what some people will buy.
I love living where I live. I love small towns.
I look forward to a new season of flea markets and yard sales and the treasures that are yet to be found. :)

Painting Passion

Obviously, I have been consumed lately.
... with paint...
I usually shy away from the idea of painting, but lately I have embraced it wholeheartedly and actually going further than I ever expected.
Yesterday, Cameo and I painted the bathroom.  It was a dull tan color and in dire need of fresh paint.
This is what it looks like this morning.

One gallon of paint and a little bit of work can be SO rewarding.

Home

I've been taking quite a few pictures of the kids lately... like I told you, I want to make a pretty collage of pictures in frames behind my couch. This is one that I LOVE. I actually had my camera on accent color, yellow. This is what it picked up. I LOVE the touches.
For those of you who will ask... my camera is a Canon Power Shot S5 IS.
I LOVE it, I still don't know all the features, but I love it and love learning more about it all the time. :)

Sunshine Yellow

If you know me in the least... you know my incredible LOVE for the color yellow. It has always been one of my favorite colors. I guess because it is associated with sunshine, and I do enjoy a sunshiney day.
Thursday and Friday were filled with a lot of painting this glorious color.
At first I was a bit afraid I had picked a neon shade with the first stroke of my brush, but thankfully after seeing it all come together it was just what I wanted.

Happy

Just what a kitchen and living room should be. :)
The picture above shows where we took down the wall... You can see a glimpse of the cedar header and post, we had to have it because it was a load-bearing wall.
While I was painting, I told my Mom... this reminds me of lemons, which reminds me... I want to make a lemon cake. One with lemon curd between the layers.
Another time...
Now, we must paint.
And we certainly did.
I will post a picture of my kitchen soon, I want to finish up first.
I want to run some ivy around the top of my cabinets.
Behind the couch I plan on making a collage of family pictures in a myriad of frames. It will be a work in progress... I will take pics along the way.

As we were sitting in the living room this morning getting our day started, I looked around and gave a happy, contented sigh.
At almost the same time Shannon looked over and said, I really like how the living room looks.
Now that says a lot!

Rainy Thursday...

Well, just after I said, I don't have a lot of time... haha
Which I really don't, but the sad fact is, I am procrastinating from beginning a ginormous job of painting my living room and kitchen.
I really want it done, but it is a monumental task with four children and there is just no way around that.
So instead of painting like I should be, I am going to share some pictures.
Alright, alright... I will quit jabbering and get on with it so I can go paint. ;)
Yesterday, I made this.
I had seen these before and told myself I was going to make one, but had since forgotten about them. Then my dear friend Rachel made one and the memory was sparked and so here we go...

if not, here is the skinny.
You take a 5.5' piece of rebar and drive it in the ground. Put a 10" pot on first (just put the rebar through the hole), fill with soil and then layer your other four 8" pots in a topsy-turvy manner. Fill them with soil and plant. I put some news paper down first thing before I drove my rebar in so I can mulch around it to keep the weeds down.

Yes, folks... I have a toilet in my yard. A toilet filled with flowers no less. And I just love it!
I am thinking I will fill the tank with water also and plant in the back too. I planted some dianthus, lantana and alyssum and one more thing (can't remember right off) in there.  Yeah, it is a bit goofy and weird, but it suits me well. So there. ;)

Here is my little ole goodwill find from last year. It was a light brown wicker. I took to painting it yesterday to make it the same whitewashed look as the rest of my porch furniture. Quick, easy and very satisfying.  The GORGEOUS pot of begonias beside it help even more. :)

Passover Celebration


This is the first year we have celebrated Passover. It was a beautiful time and went over so well, I believe we will continue each year.
Here is the list to what was served and why.

The Last Supper was held at Passover.
Invite another family over and share a Passover Meal. Read the story of the Last Supper from John 13:1-11. As you eat the traditional Jewish meal, discuss the symbolism of each of the items at the meal.
Serve Unleavened bread: This symbolizes the Bread the the Israelites took with them from Egypt. In their haste, they did not have time to let it rise. The bread that Jesus broke at the Last Supper was without yeast or unleavened. Yeast stands for sin. Jesus said the bread represents his body. He was without sin. His body was broken for us.
Serve Lamb: The Lamb was killed so that the blood could mark the doorposts of the houses of the Israelites. When the angel of death saw the blood on the doorpost he would pass over that house and not kill the first born child. Jesus is our Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
Serve Horseradish as a reminder of the bitterness the Israelites experienced while they were slaves. We remember how bitter our lives are when we are slaves to sin.
Serve Haroset. (Grind apples, nuts and a little honey together) The Haroset is eaten as a symbol of hope. Jesus is the hope of the world. He is sweeter than the honey in the honeycomb.
Dip Parsley into salt water and taste. This reminds us of the tears that were shed in Egypt. The parsley is a symbol of new life. We are reminded of the sorrow we feel when we think of Jesus dying on the cross. But the green reminds us of the new life that we have in Him.
Serve Grape Juice. Jesus said this cup was a sign of his shed blood for us on the cross. Whenever we drink it, we should drink it in remembrance of Him.
